Ten thousand men sleep down with Davy Jones;
with stolen treasure they tithe.
The open water
chills me to my bones,
but it's the only place that I feel alive.
The ocean floor begins to disappear;
I sense that terrible depth.
The open water is my only fear,
but I'll sail as long as I still have breath in me.
I'm starting to believe the ocean's
much like you,
because it gives
and it takes away.
Between the devil and the deep blue sea,
I stare into the abyss.
The open water is an awful thing,
But I'm anxious till the anchor is aweigh.
I'm starting to believe the ocean's
much like you,
because it gives
and it takes away.
I'm starting to believe the ocean's
much like you,
because it gives
and it takes away.
I'm starting to believe the ocean's
much like you,
because it gives
and it takes away.
If one song sums up the water disc, it's gotta be this one. The song's spacey and haunting atmosphere just describes the open ocean so well. I always picture someone floating in the water at night, with nothing to look at but water as far as the eye can see in all directions, possibly after their ship sank. The speaker reflects on how terrible the water is and all the lives the ocean has taken (ten thousand men sleep down with Davy Jones). But in spite of this, they want to keep sailing in it. I've always thought this song also compares water to God during the chorus. Both are free to give and take as they see fit. I think water was perfectly captured in this song...
